Rudderless Records Weekly Mailout #28

Our weekly look at this weeks new arrivals, re-stock, staff picks and a whole lot more...

Dr Dre

The Chronic

The classic debut album that started it all. After the controversial end to legendary group NWA, producer/rapper Dr Dre went his own way. The album that created a whole new soound for the West Coast, with supreme production fusing P-Funk with soul samples. This classic was also paramount in introducing the world to Snoop Doggy Dogg

Purchase

De La Soul

3 Feet High & Rising

Chief among the multiple formats of De La Soul's debut album is this 2xLP edition - especially as the original one album pressing was famed as being one of the least DJ-friendly long players in existence. Often regarded as the inception of late 80s/early 90s 'alternative rap', the trio incited said era thanks to their declaration of the 'D.A.I.S.Y. Age' (da inner sound, y'all), consciously choosing a flowery, positive hip-hop sound, accessible to everyone. Trugoy, Maseo and Posdunos offer distinct personalities across the project, suggesting alternative ways in which to stay true to one's roots while keeping on the right path.

Purchase

Sampa The Great

As Above So Below

The musical styles of As Above, So Below reflect the hybridity of Sampa’s upbringing. Raised in Botswana (a different country to her birthplace in Zambia), and then going on to attend school in different countries again, Sampa picked up varied musical influences along the way. Each style has attached itself to her own musical encyclopedia, and finds a new mode for expression throughout the record.

Purchase

Hard On's

Ripper '23

Ripper '23 is 100% Hard-Ons, which means that, like the cheap and nasty TV-advertised '70s hits compilation the album takes its title and cover art inspiration from, it is all over the shop (in a good way), highlighting the group's stylistic versatility. From the punky attack of first single "Apartment For Two" to the big balls riffing of "In Falls Everything", the record is shot through with big hooks and a surging sonic power along with some sweet production touches.
