Rudderless Records Weekly Mailout #31

Our weekly look at this weeks new arrivals, re-stock, staff picks and a whole lot more...

Lorna Shore

Pain Remains

'Pain Remains’ is the sound of a band that has honed their sound and identity. From the opening choral chants and orchestration (composed by guitarist Andrew O’Connor) of ‘Welcome Back, O’ Sleeping Dreamer’ straight into labyrinth of musical twists, turns, technicalities and raw emotion at the core of tracks like ‘Sun Eater’ or ‘Soulless Existence’ and culminating in the ‘Pain Remains’-trilogy, LORNA SHORE has woven together a sprawling document of ambition, soul and ability that few can match.

Purchase

R.E.M

Reveal

Reveal is the twelfth studio album by American alternative rock band R.E.M., released on May 14, 2001, on Warner Bros. After having adjusted to former drummer Bill Berry's departure and releasing Up to mixed response in 1998, R.E.M. released the more upbeat Reveal, co-produced with long-time collaborator Pat McCarthy.

Purchase

Willie Nelson

Bluegrass

Bluegrass is a brand-new studio album that captures a dozen classic Willie Nelson compositions--including "On the Road Again," "Yesterday's Wine," "Still is Still Moving to Me," "Good Hearted Woman" and more--freshly interpreted by Willie and an ensemble of crack players. In a seven-decade career that has seen him explore genres from one end of the musical spectrum to the other, this is his first full album dedicated to genre.

Purchase

Daniel Caesar

Never Enough

Never Enough is a much anticipated and long-awaited third album from Daniel Caeser and it comes as a follow-up to Case Study 01. The acclaimed Freudian is in fine form right now having picked up a 2023 Juno Award nomination for Best Traditional R&B/Soul Recording for 'Please Do Not Lean' which featured BADBADNOTGOOD. He also headlined the 2022 Coachella Festival and hit the Billboard Top 20 with his last EP. He reaches new heights here with his thought-provoking lyrics, catchy bars and sensuous r&b stylings.

Purchase

R.E.M

Up (25th Anniversay Edtn)

Craft Recordings celebrates the 25th anniversary of R.E.M.'s bestselling 11th studio album, Up, with a series of expanded and remastered reissues. Created in partnership with the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers, the deluxe 2-CD/singular Blu-Ray edition offers a wealth of material for fans, including the band's previously unreleased set from their guest appearance on the hit TV series, Party of Five. Purchase

New Order

Substance 1987 (Remastered) 2LP

In one of those unique cases where a compilation eclipses the studio albums, New Order's Substance is often considered the definitive representation of the band in their prime. It's understandable given it pulled together all their singles up to 1987, but equally they re-recorded classics like 'Confusion' and 'Temptation' so everything fitted together more naturally. As a result, Substance is a more cohesive listen than many similar offerings might be and these singles remain some of the finest to ever emerge from the UK's alternative music scene. Repressed and remastered, it's sounding better than ever.

Rudderless Records 'Lucky Dip' Comp

Little update on our 'Lucky Dip Flip' competition...
We have had some red hot submissions come in and they are all sounding great. We are going to announce a winner this weekend, so keep your eyes peeled for that.
We do encourage you all to keep popping inand snapping up those Lucky Dip bags as we will be rolling our prizes ongoing for this awesome, fun showcase of amazing talent and creativity.
Here are a few of the amazing submissions so far...

Bobby Dazzler by the Stone Fox

At first I thought I had a brown paper bag of turds but 3 out of 15 had some gold. Mickey Mouse Disco and Berdien Stenberg get a healthy dose of sample time with multiple elements from both records. Mickey brings the disco breaks and funk bass lick, and Berdien has some beautiful synth and resonant bass. Bobby Dazzler sneaks in there with the siren call. Filtered disco house goodness 99.9% sampled from the Rudderless vinyl lucky dip. The only added element was a Roland 606 bass kick to fatten up the low end. I had so much fun making this, can’t wait to get another lucky dip and do it again.

To celebrate AUS Music Month, we have teamed up with Rudderless Records’ Ben Leece to create 5 Wednesday’s on Wax playlists, diving into different genres of music. With music being an important aspect to all things Brixton, we are excited to share these playlists each week with you.⁣
⁣⁣
A genre at the core of how Brixton began, our final playlist for AUS Music Month is rock/alternative. If there’s one thing Australia knows, it’s rock and roll. With roots as long as you’d like them, they continue to grow.
