Rudderless Records Weekly Mailout #42

Our weekly look at this weeks new arrivals, re-stock, staff picks and a whole lot more...

Wugazi

13 Chambers

A usual suspect of the hip-hop re-edits scene, Wugazi was the clever novelty project of Andy Lund (Field Guide, The Millionth Word) and Kyle Smith (Doomtree), two Minneapolis producers whose lightbulb ingenuity might be said to have rivalled Edison or Pythagoras when they resolved to produce Wugazi - a mashup album consisting of instrumentals by straight-edge punk band Fugazi and acapellas of the samurai-obsessed Wu-Tang Clan.

J Mascis
What Do We Do Now?

What Do We Do Now is the fifth solo studio LP recorded by J Mascis since 1996. This is obviously not a very aggressive release schedule, but when you figure in the live albums, guest spots and records done with his various other bands (primarily Dinosaur Jr. but also The Fog, Heavy Blanket, Witch, Sweet Apple, and so on), then, to paraphrase Lou Reed, "J's week beats your year." What Do We Do Now began to come together during the waning days of the Pandemic. Utilizing his own Bisquiteen Studio, J started working on writing a series of tunes on acoustic with a different dynamic than the stuff he creates for Dino. The finest set of solo tunes J has yet penned, this is a playful and soft compendium of indie songs revelling in disbelief, uncertainty and community.

The Cramps

Flamejob

The garage punk band The Cramps returned in 1994 with their sixth studio album Flamejob. Wild vocals from Lux Interior and the creepy guitar work from Poison Ivy marks one of their most energetic performances in quite a long time.

Purchase

Ghetto Brothers

Power Fuerza

If you listen to those who know about such things, then The Ghetto Brothers' Power-Fuerz album is one of the best-ever Latin funk records. The group formed on the streets of New York City's South Bronx in the late 1960s and often called themselves a gang as much as a band. They were keen supporters of Puerto Rican nationalism and were motivated to help uplift fellow Latino and Black men in their community. Back in 1971 is when they released their one and only album and it had little to no promotion and was only distributed locally so is one of those that has since taken on cult status.

Gabriels

Bloodline 12" EP

This 2021 four-track EP reflects ever-expanded horizons for the band - 'Bloodline' is the latest output from loose-limbed, soul-stirring funk band Gabriels. Quickly finding fans in the likes of Elton John, Celeste, Paul Weller, Benji B, and Gilles Peterson, Gabriels should soon find plenty more on a record that could soundtrack a David Lynch epic; such is its drama, its suspenseful, late-night orchestral ruminations.
